Accountant Resume Template

An accountant resume built from a real posting open to every level: how to stand out with SYSCOHADA, annual tax returns, audits and team management.

The candidate of this template is fictional: keep the structure, replace the content with yours.

This is the resume of an accountant applying to a public job posting in Cameroon, with openings in Douala, Yaoundé, Bafoussam, Maroua and Garoua. The candidate is fictional: keep the structure and the way each line is written, then replace the content with your own background. Below you'll find the keywords that matter in the posting, lines rewritten before and after, advice for each experience level, and a template ready to download as PDF or Word.

A posting open to everyone, from high school diploma to master's degree and from student to senior, gets a flood of applications. Your resume has a few seconds to show it answers this posting, not every accounting job.

The trap of a posting open to everyone

When a posting accepts every level of education and experience, most candidates send the same generic resume: "bookkeeping", "rigorous", "proficient in accounting software". The recruiter can't tell them apart. The one who uses the posting's exact words, and backs them with a number, moves ahead.

The posting also hides an expectation few candidates notice. The duties talk about accounts, financial statements, standards and audits. But the profile adds that the role "also involves managing a team and working with other departments". The employer isn't only looking for someone to post entries: they want someone who can run the accounting team.

What the recruiter is really looking for

Here are the phrases from the posting to reuse in your resume, and how to prove each one.

Managing a team

This is the line almost nobody reads. Say how many people you have supervised, even an intern: "Supervised 2 accounting assistants and 1 intern: split the data entry, reviewed it weekly".

Preparing and analysing monthly and annual financial statements

Everyone writes it. Show speed and reliability instead: "Cut the monthly close from 12 to 5 days by automating bank reconciliations".

Compliance with accounting standards and regulations

In Cameroon, these standards have a name: use it. "Annual financial statements under revised SYSCOHADA; annual tax return (DSF) filed on time three years in a row".

Managing internal and external audits

An audit is measured by its qualifications. Give the before and after: "External audit: 7 qualifications from the statutory auditor in 2022, none in 2024".

Working with other departments

Name the teams you work with and what changes because of it: "Monthly reporting shared with purchasing and sales: stock variances explained every month".

Strong command of accounting software

The posting doesn't name any: do it for them. Write "Sage 100 Accounting" or "Advanced Excel (pivot tables)", never "accounting software".

Before and after: five lines rewritten

The same experience, written two ways. The first describes a job, the second proves a result.

  • Before: "General bookkeeping." After: "Kept the books of 14 client SMEs (retail, construction, services) in Sage 100 Accounting."
  • Before: "Team player with leadership skills." After: "Supervised 2 accounting assistants and 1 intern, with a weekly review of their entries."
  • Before: "Preparation of financial statements." After: "Cut the monthly close from 12 to 5 days; annual financial statements under revised SYSCOHADA."
  • Before: "Took part in audits." After: "External audit: 7 qualifications from the statutory auditor in 2022, none in 2024."
  • Before: "Tax and social security returns." After: "Monthly VAT, payroll tax and social security (CNPS) returns filed on time, no penalty in three years."

Adapting the resume to your level

The posting accepts every profile, but you don't write the same resume at 22 and with 15 years behind you.

  • Student or recent graduate: put your education first, then your internships with a number each (documents posted, reconciliations done, year-end files prepared). An internship at an accounting firm counts as real experience.
  • Two to five years: highlight the close, the tax returns and an audit you went through. At this level, supervising an intern or an assistant makes the difference.
  • More than five years: open with team management and audit results. Talk about the team you trained, the procedures you set up, the qualifications you cleared.
  • More than ten years: keep it to a page and a half at most. Sum up older roles in one line and detail the last five years.

The vocabulary a recruiter in Cameroon expects

These terms reassure a recruiter in Cameroon straight away, as long as they match what you have actually done.

  • Revised SYSCOHADA: the accounting framework of the OHADA countries, Cameroon included. Name it for financial statements.
  • DSF: the annual statistical and tax return filed with the tax administration. Having prepared one is a real asset.
  • VAT, IRPP, CNPS: the most common monthly returns (VAT, payroll income tax, social security). Say which ones you file, and whether it's penalty-free.
  • Statutory auditor and qualifications: the language of the legal audit. Qualifications cleared are the strongest proof.
  • Bank reconciliation, matching, closing: the daily work of the job. Tie them to a deadline or a volume.

Applying in several cities

The posting covers five cities. Write your city at the top of the resume, next to your phone number, and say whether you can work elsewhere: "Douala (open to Yaoundé, Bafoussam)". Recruiters often sort applications by city; a clear mobility keeps you in several piles at once. Only list the cities you would really move to.

Adapting this template to your application

  1. Read the whole posting, profile included, and underline the phrases that describe a task or an expected result.
  2. For each one, find a true achievement from your background, with a number: a deadline, a volume, a headcount, qualifications.
  3. Write each line with an action verb, a scope and a result, as in the template.
  4. Put first in your experience the line that answers the rarest phrase of the posting, here managing a team.
  5. Name the standards and software exactly: revised SYSCOHADA, DSF, Sage 100, Excel.
  6. State your city and mobility at the top, then save as PDF to send.

The .docx file can be edited in Word or Google Docs; the PDF is ready to send as is. The template is a single column with no photo: applicant tracking systems read it without errors.

Frequently asked questions

Is this resume template free?

Yes. The PDF downloads directly; the editable Word file is yours once you leave your email address.

I'm an accounting student with no experience: can I apply?

Yes, this posting explicitly accepts students. Put your education first, then your internships with numbers: documents posted, bank reconciliations done, year-end files prepared. An internship at an accounting firm is a real asset.

Should an accountant's resume have a photo?

This template has none, so applicant tracking systems read it without errors. Many employers in Cameroon accept a photo: if you add one, pick a recent one, on a plain background, in work clothes. If the posting asks for a resume without a photo, leave it out.

I've never managed anyone: what can I write instead?

Look for a true equivalent: an intern you trained, a colleague you covered for during their leave, a procedure you explained to another department. Write it plainly, with the number of people involved.

I learned IFRS: should I mention SYSCOHADA?

For a job in Cameroon, yes: it's the framework employers expect. Name revised SYSCOHADA if you have used it, and add IFRS on top, especially if the company belongs to an international group.

Should I send a different resume for each city?

No. One resume is enough, with your city and mobility at the top. Adapt it to each posting instead: the keywords change from one employer to the next.

Is the candidate in the template real?

No. The profile and figures are fictional but realistic, to show what a strong resume line looks like. Don't copy the achievements: replace them with yours.

Can I use this template for another job?

Yes. The structure suits accounting assistant, accounts payable, chief accountant or audit assistant roles. Keep the method: each line answers a keyword of the posting you're targeting.
